Automobiles in Germany's Town Found Smeared with Nazi Symbols in Blood, Police Report

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Police
Police mentioned they were notified by a man who discovered a car in Hanau covered with reddish liquid

Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials report initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.

City officials stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A high-ranking representative stated the incident left him stunned and had to be solved promptly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
