Everyone Are Invited to Become the Additional Haim Sisters Member.
"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."
However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several famous fans have openly petitioned for the honor.
One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy contenders.
Similar to the greatest groups, they're a close gang. Their visuals often feature them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."
"So everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."
Award Nod
The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.
They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the award.
"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"
The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.
"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."
Emotional Upheaval and Humour
The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.
The words detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.
"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."
Evolution of Sound
That recent resilience called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.
"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."
Experiences and Shared Camaraderie
The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.
One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.
"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."
A Secure Path
It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.
They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.
But the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.
"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
